What is Methylene Blue?
Methylene Blue is a phenothiazine dye with multiple pharmacological mechanisms: electron carrier in the mitochondrial ETC (bypassing Complexes I-III), MAO-A inhibitor, guanylate cyclase inhibitor, and NOS inhibitor. Studied for mitochondrial rescue, cognitive enhancement, Alzheimer disease models, and methaemoglobinaemia antidote research. Research use only.
Research Applications
Mitochondrial Electron Carrier
Complex I-III bypass, ETC rescue, ATP production in dysfunctional mitochondria
Cognitive Enhancement Research
Cytochrome c oxidase activation, BDNF upregulation, memory consolidation models
MAO-A Inhibition
Monoamine oxidase inhibition, serotonin/noradrenaline metabolism, neurotransmitter levels
Alzheimer Disease Models
Tau phosphorylation inhibition, amyloid aggregation, mitochondrial dysfunction rescue
Antidote Research
Methaemoglobinaemia reversal — NADPH-dependent MetHb reduction mechanism
