What is Tamoxifen?
Tamoxifen is a first-generation triphenylethylene SERM — ER antagonist in breast tissue, partial ER agonist in bone/liver/uterus. Metabolised to endoxifen (CYP2D6) — the primary active metabolite. Also the most widely used inducer for tamoxifen-inducible CreERT2/loxP conditional knockout mouse models. CAS 10540-29-1.
Research Applications
Breast Cancer Research
ER antagonist in mammary tissue — foundational hormone-sensitive cancer
SERM Pharmacology
Tissue-selective ERα/ERβ agonism/antagonism — bone, liver, uterus vs breast
Tamoxifen-Inducible Cre
Primary inducing agent for CreERT2/loxP conditional knockout models
CYP2D6 Metabolism
Endoxifen activation — pharmacogenomic metabolism research
HPG Axis
Hypothalamic ER antagonism → LH/FSH restoration in PCT models
