What is Semax?
Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide derived from the adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) fragment ACTH(4-10), developed by Russian researchers for cognitive enhancement and neuroprotection. Unlike its parent hormone ACTH, Semax has no hormonal activity but retains and enhances nootropic effects. The peptide consists of the ACTH(4-7) sequence with an added Pro-Gly-Pro tripeptide that increases stability and extends its half-life.
Semax works through multiple mechanisms including BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) upregulation, modulation of neurotransmitter systems (dopamine, serotonin, acetylcholine), improvement of cerebral blood flow, and neuroprotective effects against oxidative stress and excitotoxicity. It has been extensively studied in Russian and European research for cognitive enhancement, stroke recovery, ADHD, and various neurological conditions.
