What is P21?
p21, also known as CDKN1A or WAF1, is a cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor that plays a central role in cell cycle regulation. It is transcriptionally activated by the tumor suppressor p53 in response to DNA damage.
p21 functions by binding to and inhibiting cyclin-CDK2 or -CDK4 complexes, causing cell cycle arrest at the G1/S checkpoint. It is a critical regulator of cellular senescence, DNA repair, and tumor suppression.
