What is HCG??
Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG, CAS 9002-61-3) is a heterodimeric glycoprotein hormone (MW ~36.7 kDa; α-subunit shared with LH/FSH/TSH, unique β-subunit) produced by syncytiotrophoblasts. hCG binds the luteinising hormone/choriogonadotropin receptor (LHCGR) with high affinity — activating Gs/adenylate cyclase → cAMP → PKA signalling — stimulating steroidogenesis in Leydig cells (testosterone production) and in corpus luteum (progesterone maintenance). It is the fundamental tool for studying LH receptor biology, gonadal steroidogenesis, and pituitary-gonadal axis function.
Research Applications
Leydig Cell Steroidogenesis
LHCGR activation, testosterone biosynthesis, StAR/CYP11A1/CYP17A1 enzyme expression
LH Receptor Biology
cAMP/PKA signalling, receptor internalisation, LHCGR desensitisation kinetics
Corpus Luteum Function
Progesterone maintenance, luteal phase studies, luteolysis prevention models
Male Reproductive Research
Testicular descent, Leydig cell function, spermatogenesis support in hypogonadism models
HPG Axis Studies
Hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, LH receptor cross-reactivity with FSH-α subunit research
