What is Exemestane?
Exemestane is a steroidal, irreversible aromatase inhibitor used clinically in the management of hormone receptor-positive breast cancer in postmenopausal women. It works by permanently binding to the aromatase enzyme (CYP19A1), thereby blocking the conversion of androgens into estrogens.
Because it is a “suicide inhibitor,” exemestane permanently deactivates the aromatase enzyme, leading to sustained suppression of circulating estrogen levels until new enzyme is synthesized.
