What is Alprostadil??
Alprostadil (Prostaglandin E1 / PGE1, CAS 745-65-3) is a naturally occurring 20-carbon prostaglandin with molecular formula C₂₀H₃₄O₅ and MW 354.46 g/mol. As a potent EP receptor agonist, it activates adenylate cyclase → cAMP accumulation → smooth muscle relaxation in both vascular and corporal tissue. In research models, PGE1 induces peripheral vasodilation within minutes, inhibits platelet aggregation via cAMP-mediated mechanisms, and stimulates endothelial VEGF and eNOS expression. It also demonstrates cytoprotective, nephroprotective, and anti-inflammatory activity across multiple organ models.
Research Applications
Vascular Smooth Muscle
cAMP-mediated relaxation, EP2/EP4 receptor activation, vasodilation kinetics
Erectile Function Research
Intracavernosal blood flow, corpus cavernosum smooth muscle, venous occlusion models
Platelet Aggregation
cAMP inhibition of platelet function, anti-thrombotic signalling studies
Endothelial Biology
VEGF and eNOS upregulation, angiogenesis, contrast-induced nephropathy protection
Cardiac/Renal Protection
Cardioprotective signalling (Wnt5a/JNK/NF-κB, GSK-3β/Nrf2/HO-1), renal ischemia models
