What is Isotretinoin?
Isotretinoin (13-cis-retinoic acid) is a synthetic retinoid — the most potent oral sebosuppressive agent known. Binds RARα/β/γ and RXR nuclear receptors, reducing sebaceous gland size and activity, inducing apoptosis in sebocytes, and normalising keratinocyte differentiation. Additionally studied for anti-inflammatory, anti-proliferative (neuroblastoma), and differentiating effects. Research use only.
Research Applications
Sebaceous Gland Biology
Sebocyte apoptosis, sebum production suppression, SCD1/FASN pathway
RAR/RXR Receptor Pharmacology
Retinoid receptor binding, retinoic acid response element (RARE) activation
Keratinocyte Differentiation
Follicular hyperkeratinisation inhibition, comedogenesis models, skin barrier
Neuroblastoma Differentiation
Neural crest cell differentiation, MYCN suppression, neurite outgrowth
Anti-Inflammatory Skin Research
Innate immune pathway modulation in sebaceous gland inflammation, TLR2 signalling
