What is AICAR?
AICAR (5-Aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide ribonucleotide) is an AMP mimetic that activates AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) — the master cellular energy sensor. AICAR enters cells and is phosphorylated to ZMP, which mimics the effect of elevated AMP:ATP ratio. Activates AMPK downstream pathways: fatty acid oxidation, glucose uptake, mitochondrial biogenesis, autophagy, and inhibition of mTORC1. Classic research tool for energy sensing biology. Research use only.
Research Applications
AMPK Activation
Classic AMPK activator — phospho-AMPK, downstream ACC/HMGCR/TSC2 phosphorylation
Exercise Mimetic Research
AICAR-activated endurance gene programs — running capacity, fibre type shift models
Glucose Metabolism
GLUT4 translocation, glucose uptake, insulin-independent pathway research
Fatty Acid Oxidation
CPT1 derepression, mitochondrial β-oxidation flux, ketogenesis
Autophagy & mTOR Inhibition
mTORC1 suppression via AMPK-TSC2 axis, ULK1 activation, autophagy flux
