What is Botulinum Toxin Type A??
Botulinum Toxin Type A (BoNT-A, CAS 93384-43-1) is a 150 kDa zinc-dependent metalloprotease produced by Clostridium botulinum. It consists of a 100 kDa heavy chain (receptor binding and membrane translocation) disulfide-linked to a 50 kDa light chain (catalytic endopeptidase). BoNT-A cleaves SNAP-25 (synaptosomal-associated protein 25 kDa) at the presynaptic neuromuscular junction – preventing SNARE complex assembly required for acetylcholine (ACh) vesicle fusion and release. This produces localised chemodenervation lasting 3-6 months until new nerve terminal sprouting restores function. BoNT-A is both the world’s most potent biological toxin and one of the most widely used therapeutics, forming the mechanistic basis for cosmetic wrinkle reduction, spasticity treatment, hyperhidrosis, migraine prophylaxis, and autonomic disorder research.
