What is Glutathione??
L-Glutathione Reduced (GSH, γ-L-Glutamyl-L-cysteinylglycine, CAS 70-18-8) is the most abundant intracellular antioxidant tripeptide. Molecular formula C₁₀H₁₇N₃O₆S, MW 307.32 g/mol. GSH is a critical substrate for glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione S-transferase (GST), and glutaredoxin — neutralising reactive oxygen species, detoxifying xenobiotics, and maintaining thiol-redox homeostasis. In research settings, GSH is used to study oxidative stress, immune function, liver detoxification, and the γ-glutamyl cycle (GGT/GSS/GSR pathways).
Research Applications
Oxidative Stress Research
ROS scavenging, lipid peroxidation (MDA, 4-HNE), protein carbonylation quantification
Glutathione Peroxidase / GST
Enzyme activity assays, H₂O₂ and organic peroxide reduction, xenobiotic detoxification
Immune Function
Lymphocyte proliferation, NK cell activity, Th1/Th2 cytokine balance under GSH depletion/repletion
Liver Detoxification
Phase II conjugation, hepatoprotective models (acetaminophen, CCl₄), GSH depletion kinetics
Glutathione Cycling
GSH/GSSG ratio, glutathione reductase (GSR), GGT pathway, thiol-redox homeostasis
