What is EPO (Erythropoietin)??
Erythropoietin (EPO, CAS 11096-26-7) is a 30.4 kDa glycoprotein hormone produced primarily by renal peritubular cells in response to hypoxia. Recombinant human EPO (rhEPO) binds the homodimeric EPO receptor (EPOR) on erythroid progenitor cells, activating JAK2/STAT5, PI3K/Akt, and MAPK signalling pathways — promoting red blood cell proliferation, differentiation, and survival. Beyond erythropoiesis, EPO research has expanded into neuroprotection, cardioprotection, and tissue ischaemia models through EPOR expression in non-haematopoietic tissues.
Research Applications
Erythropoiesis
BFU-E/CFU-E differentiation, reticulocyte maturation, haemoglobin synthesis in progenitor models
JAK2/STAT5 Signalling
EPOR-mediated kinase activation, STAT5 phosphorylation, erythroid transcription factor profiling
Hypoxia Response
HIF-1α/HIF-2α regulation, hypoxic EPO induction, oxygen-sensing pathway studies
Neuroprotection
Non-haematopoietic EPOR in neurons, ischaemic brain injury, anti-apoptotic EPOR signalling
Cardioprotection
EPOR in cardiomyocytes, myocardial infarction protection, cardiac remodelling models
